Making Money with Books You Don’t Need

booksEveryone has them…books that you’re not currently using. Having just come off a three-seasons-late (or maybe one season early?) decluttering binge at home while we we’ve been repainting one room at a time, believe me, we have LOTS of extra books that need a new home.

Here are some ideas for getting rid of the books, but putting a little jingle in your pocket at the same time:

Cash4Books - this site allows you to sell back textbooks. I’ve used Cash4Books before, and although they don’t buy back every textbook, it’s a blessing to get some money for those that they DO buy back. After the books are received and inspected, you’ll receive your money via PayPal. Refer a friend to the site after you sign up, and you’ll get $5 yourself!

Amazon.com Textbook Buyback –  actually, this is one of my favorite ways to get a few freebies. Amazon will buy back a number of items, including textbooks, video games, and movies/tv. They pay the shipping, and once they inspect your items, they will credit your Amazon account with Amazon gift certificates, allowing you to buy anything on their site. Some prices may be lower than you would let the item go for. For instance, we were looking at trading in some Thomas the Tank Engine DVDs that my son no longer watches on Amazon. The titles we listed were only getting 25 cents each, so we decided to keep them. Do check your items at different places. You may get more at Amazon than at Cash4Books, or vice versa.

Half.com - although this is more a do-it-yourself solution, you can list your books on Half.com, a division of eBay. (I buy nearly all my husband’s grad school textbooks here rather than buying them through the university). You set the price, list the condition, etc. When your item sells, you get an email notification to ship the book. Half.com settles up by direct deposit twice per month.

Paperback Swap – Although they won’t pay you money for the books, you get paid back plenty in the form of FREE books! When you list ten books, you’ll receive two credits immediately and can request a book from any other PaperBack Swap member. If another member requests the book you listed, you’ll have to ship that book via MediaMail, and you’ll receive another credit when that person receives the book and verifies that it is received. True, you are paying for the shipping out of your own pocket, but that’s still way cheaper than buying the book new off the shelf somewhere. For instance, after catching the movie The Shunning on the Hallmark Channel recently, my girls were eager to read the books…especially since the movie covered only the first of the three books in the series. Since I had 3 credits with Paperback Swap, I was able to order all three books in the series for absolutely nothing! Love it!

Have you had success with any other site that buys back books?
