Build a School Bus at Lowe’s on 8/22

Here’s a free activity that might help the kids get excited about going back to school. Lowe’s Build and Grow workshop will be held on Saturday, August 22, from 10:00-11:00 A.M. They recommend that you pre-register so they will have enough kits. Attendees receive a free kit, a kid-sized apron, a set of goggles, and all the tools and materials needed to build this school bus. (A little help from a parent is strongly encouraged!) Finish the project, and you’ll receive a certificate of achievement as well as a patch or pin picturing the item they made. They do this every month. Next month’s activity will be a little wooden drum with the Lowe’s logo on top (September 12)!

Not near a Lowe’s? Consider attending a Home Depot Kids Workshop, which operates in a similar manner. Workshops are designed for kids ages 5-12, and are held on the first Saturday of each month, free of charge, between the hours of 9 AM and noon. Earlier this month, we used a Kids Workshop as a birthday party activity for my son and his friends. They built a cool corkboard and dry erase message center! Go here to see the bean bag toss scheduled for Saturday, September 5.

Teacher Appreciation Day at Office Max – August 9

If you missed the last Office Max Teacher Appreciation Day in July, maybe you’ll make this one. It’s today!

Whether you’re a homeschool educator or teach in a regular classroom, you’ll receive an Office Max tote bag with freebies and coupons in it. Most noteably, there’s a 15% off coupon for anything you can cram into the bag. (Don’t get too excited. I don’t think you’re allowed to shove a laptop in there.) But this is even better news for my Tennessee friends, since today is the final day of tax-free back-to-school shopping, which is another big savings. Go here to find the nearest Office Max participating in this promotion.

This offer is open to all current MaxPerks for Teachers members and to people who sign up to become a MaxPerks for Teachers member. (Of course, it’s my favorite price…FREE!) It’s a great program, netting you a $10 gift card to Office Max when your purchases reach $75 in a quarter. I read just this week that the average amount a classroom teacher spends out of his or her own pocket each year is $1200! This is a great way to get a return on some of that spending.

Thanks, Office Max, for helping out our educators!

There are a few FREE special events going on this weekend that I wanted to make sure you know about.

For Adults:

  • The All You Reality-Checked event going on at select Wal-Marts across the nation on April 25 or 26. For more details or to see if your local Wal-mart is participating, read my previous blog post.

For Kids:

  • Toys R Us is sponsoring yet another playdate with Thomas the Tank Engine on Saturday, April 25, from 11 AM-1 PM. For more information, click here.
  • Lowe’s is sponsoring another Build and Grow Kids workshop on Saturday, April 25 from 10-11 AM. They’ll be making hang gliders this time. Go here to find a Lowe’s near you, and to see the cool craft that’s coming up for Mother’s Day (to be built on May 9).

Earth Day Freebies and Deals

  • Do you have friends or family who work at Walgreens? If not, maybe you can make friends with your favorite cashier. Walgreens will be celebrating Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22, with a special friends and family coupon, entitling the bearer to a FREE reusable tote bag, 15% off regular merchandise (with exclusions like gift cards and prescriptions), and 20% off Walgreens branded items! You’ll need the original coupon, though, not a duplicate, to take advantage of this offer. They were at every register at the Walgreens where I shop. Don’t be afraid to ask!
  • If you live near a Disney Store, here’s a great promo: when you take in three plastic bottles to recycle on Earth Day (4/22), you’ll receive a free gift. Offer is good while supplies last. To find a store near you, try this locator.
  • O’Charley’s Restaurant invites you to come by for a FREE strawberry lemonade on Earth Day. (Technically, this is for Administrative Professionals’ Week, but the deal is valid only on Wednesday, so I included it in this list.)
  • Reynolds Wrap is offering a coupon for a mail-in rebate to try their 100% recycled alumimum foil. Sign up here, and they will send you a reminder to come back on Earth Day and claim your coupon. Quantities are limited.

"Reality Checked" Event from All You and Wal-Mart

All You magazine is sponsoring a Reality Checked booth at select Wal-Mart stores across the country on April 25 and 26 from 11 AM-5 PM. Free product samples will be handed out from corporate sponsors Schick and Poise, and travel tips from All You readers will also be available.

To see if a Wal-Mart in your area is participating, go here and click on your state’s link in the left column. (For my local readers, the Winchester Wal-Mart is participating on Sunday, April 26; Tullahoma’s date is the previous day.)

Happy freebie-ing!
